North Dakota Music

Welcome to North Dakota music. The music of North Dakota in United States has followed the general American music trends over much of its history - starting with ragtime and folk music, and then entering into big band and jazz. With the gradual development of mass media, the local North Dakota artists witnessed a rapid loss of opportunity to create, perform and sell popular music to the neighboring and regional audience that previously was the target market for music. Even though North Dakota is an agricultural region, country music failed to be a major genre in the modern youth generation of North Dakota. Nevertheless, several country artists who attracted and created appeal to older audiences have emerged from North Dakota, itself.

Let's delve deep into the various North Dakota music genres. Starting with the North Dakota ethnic music, this is one type of music that has been around for more than a century. This music can best be termed as the "old-time" music. In many parts of North Dakota German music is still played, sung and danced to. Such music is well represented by polkas, two-steps, fast waltzes, the butterfly and schottisches. Then the popular music in North Dakota comes. In the present day, North Dakota has a number of indie acts, metal, and punk rock. For the local artists the most active music scenes in popular styles are in Minot, Fargo and Grand Forks, whereas Dickinson, Devils Lake, Bismarck, and Williston are also active but upto a lesser extent.

One of the distinguishing music trends of North Dakota are the touring acts. Smaller musical groups passing by North Dakota often play and perform at the independently-promoted shows that are held in North Dakota's larger cities alongside the local acts. Apart from popular music, classical music and jazz are also very popular and commonly heard in the state of North Dakota.
