The Fargo Theatre is 80-years old, well equipped with 21st century technology, and superbly restored art deco décor quite effectively anchors the festival every year. The history of Fargo Theatre goes on like this: In November, 1999, a group of filmmakers, film lovers and educators, with the help of theatre volunteers, staff members and tourism specialists, gathered at the newly restored Fargo Theatre for discussing the possibility of starting a Fargo Film Festival. This discussion also included the selection of the Fargo Theatre as a Library of Congress Film Preservation Tour site for the year 2000. In March, 2000, with lots of guidance and insight from the passionate, film obsessed teacher Ted Larson, the Fargo Theatre celebrated the rich history of film with picks from the esteemed Library of Congress collection. Actor Janet Leigh who attended the weeklong celebration, proved to be one of the most elegant guest. This success of the Library of Congress tour fueled the fire for starting the annual Fargo Film Festival.
But in November, 2000, the unexpected death of Ted Larson took place. But his passion for film prevailed and the Fargo Film Festival became a reality in March, 2001. From then onwards, the festival has grown quite significantly with numerous submissions from several states and countries.
