The government of North Dakota classified every incorporated place in the state as a city regardless of size. There are no towns, villages or hamlets in the state. Following is a list of the cities in North Dakota depending on the density of population:
- Fargo: is a city in Cass County, North Dakota. It is the county seat of Cass County, located in the Red River Valley region. In the year 2000 the census estimates the population of the city to be 90,599 whick makes it the largest city in North Dakota. It is the crossroads and economic center of a large portion of northwestern Minnesota. By population this the largest of all the cities in North Dakota. It is also the home to North Dakota State University.

- Bismarck: is the capital city of North Dakota and according to the census of 2000 the estimated population of the city is 58,333making it the second populous city in North Dakota. It is also the County Seat of Burligh County.
- Grand Forks: is the third largest city of North Dakota with an estimated population of 53,230. located on the western bank of the Red River of the north in an extremely flat region the city is prone to flooding and was struck by a devastationg flood in 1997.
- Minot : is a city located in the north central North Dakota. With a population of 36,567 this is the fourth largest city of the state. This is the county eat of Ward County.
- Mandan : is the county seat of Morton county and the city was founded in 1879.
- Dickinson : is a city in Stark County, North Dakota. It is the county seat of Stark Countty. Founded in 1882 the city has a population of about 16,010.
