Grand Forks


The city of Grand Forks is known to be the third largest city of North Dakota. The city of Grand Forks is situated on the shores of Red River. As floods take place every year in the river during the spring time, this region is also prone to flooding. This city was actually founded by Alexander Griggs who was a steam boat captain in the year 1870.

Speaking about the economy of Grand Forks, we have to speak about agriculture. Agriculture has been the mainstay of the economy of the city from its inception. But now things are changing. There are various other things which are also a part of the economy. These include defense, education, manufacturing, health care, scientific research as well as food processing.
The service sector and the retail sector are also important revenue earners for the economy of Grand Forks. There are a lot of small shops and restaurants here. The south of Grand Forks is considered to be the retail hub of the city.

Grand Forks is known to have a mayor council model of government. It is a form of municipal government. In this city, the mayor is elected for a period of 4 years here. The mayor looks after the administration of the city as well as directly works with the various heads of the departments. There are seven wards in the city and each city has a council representative who is again elected for a period of 4 years. All the city council representatives meet twice in a month and discuss issues.



Transportation facilities in Grand Forks is extremely good. There is an international airport in the city known as the Grand Forks International Airport. The Northwest Airlines operates through this airport. Railway services are also extremely good in the city. The BNSF Railway operates through the various parts of the city. Roads in the city are of excellent condition. Various federal highways pass through the city of Grand Forks and connects it to various other parts of the state.

Education in Grand Forks also plays a major role. There are schools in the city which are divided into elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. They all come under the Grand Forks Public Schools System. Other than these the city has the University of North Dakota which is known to be the oldest and the largest university of the state.
