Cuisine of North Dakota

The cuisine of North Dakota differs from average Midwestern cuisine in a variety of ways. Though much ofteh cuisine of the Midwestern region has a strong Germa influence, North Dakota has a strong influence from Norway as well as from a number of German-Rusiam immigrants. As in the whole of the Midwestern region so as in North Dakota, meals are typically served in a smorgasbord format rather than in course. The typical English equivalent to any buffet with a variety of dishes. At home the term refers to to a typical holiday feast at which the family and guests can hlp themselves. In restaurant, the term refers to buffet style table laid out withmany smal dishes. Some of the notable cuisine of North Dakota are:

Lefse: is a traditional soft Norwegian flatbread made out of potato, milk and cream and flour and cooked on griddle. Special tools are available for Lefse baking. In central Norway, a variation called tynnlefse is made which is rolled up with butter, sugar and cinnamona nd eaten as a cake. Potetlefse is often used in place of a hot dog buna nd can be used to roll up sausages. There are many ways of spicing lefse. The most common is adding butter and sugar to the lefse and rolling it up. This is the most popular cuisine of North Dakota.



Kuchen: is the German word for cake. The term is used to describe different types of desserts, pastries and gateaux.

Summer Sausage: is a general term for any sausagethat can be kept without refrigeration. Summer sausage is usually a mixture of pork and other meats like bef and venison. The summer sausage can either be dried or smoked.

Fleischkuekle: is a meat pie made with flat bread, similar to a Cornish pastry or Russian vareniki. This is a taditional German Russian recipe and through immigration it became a part of cuisine of North Dakota.
