North Dakota Museum of Art was established in 1970s. It was known as University of North Dakota Art Galleries. The museum was conferred the status of official Art Museum of North Dakota by North Dakota Legislative Assembly in 1981. The museum underwent reconstruction in 1989. The 1907 West Gymnasium on the UND campus was restructured. The permanent art collection of North Dakota Museum of Art includes a host of contemporary native Americana arts and international arts. The Permannent Collection include arts Walter Piehl, Pons, Bartone Benes, Nancy Friese, Mark Klett, David Madzo, Georgie Papageorge, Kiki Smith, jim Dow and more.
North Dakota Museum of Art hosts many national and international art exhibitions. The popular art displays include Snow Country Prison, Juan Manuel Echavarrķa Mouths of Ash, The Disappeared and Mary Lucier The Plains of Sweet Regret. Past Exhibitions featured art collection of James Cottrell and Joseph Lovett. There are arts and portraits commemorating Lewis and Clarke expedition. There are self portraits by artists form various corners of the world. There art specimens by renowned artists like Georgie Papageorgec and Vance Gellert and Marjorie Schlossman.
