Languages Spoken in North Dakota

North Dakota is a state located in the Midwestern and the western regions. Bismarck is the capital of the state and it is regarded as the twelfth largest state in United States in terms of area. Fargo is the largest city in the state. The region is highly developed with the United States air force base at both Minot and Grand Forks. The population of North Dakota has increased slowly with time. Wells County is considered as the center of population of North Dakota.

The majority of populations in North Dakota are of European background though people of other cultures are also here. The five largest ancestry groups in the region include the German, Norwegian, Irish, Native American and Swedish. North Dakota has about 18,000 speakers. The state is also a member of the Siouan language family. North Dakota is located in United States and the region at present does not have any official language. The main language to be spoken by majority of population is English. In fact about 82% of the total population of the nation speaks English as their native language. Since the Native American still form the minority population in the state, these people still speak their native language. But this population is rapidly dropping hence the languages are almost never widely used outside of reservations. Apart from English, the native people also speak the Hawaiian.

Some other languages besides English are either spoken by the immigrants or are learned as some form of modern education. All over United States, about 337 languages are spoken of which 176 are the native dialects, 52 languages are formally spoken.
