Politics and Government of North Dakota

The Republican Party and the democratic NPL are the major political parties in North Dakota. Other than these two parties some other parties do exist in the region but they do not take part directly in elections. The governor is considered as the head of the state and hence since 1992 the governorship is held by the Republican Party. In the 2000 governor election the Dem-NPL played important role. It also took part in the 2006 legislative election. Since the Republican Party is strong in United States it usually carries the state. In the year 2004, George Bush won the presidential election with majority votes. North Dakota also has an active part in the nation politics. Since the year 1882 many participated in the politics and received the Electoral College votes from North Dakota these include such famous names as Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Lyndon Baines Johnson.

The other party the democratic NPL had its candidates for North Dakota's federal senate and congressional seats. The candidates won most of the elections since 1992, making Dakota's federal delegation entirely democratic. At present John Hoeven who belongs from the Republican Party is the governor of North Dakota. Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan are the two U.S senators. Earl Pomeroy is the congressman of the state.

North Dakota has a bicameral legislature. Two house representatives and one senator from each of 47 districts of it. At every 80 days gap the legislatures meet the North Dakota State Capitol. Usually the chief political posts and the politicians from the state are elected as the governor generals, lieutenant governors, united state senators, secretary of state of North Dakota and Attorney generals.
