Dakota Railroads

BNSF and Canadian Pacifi cRailway operate the most extensive Dakota Railroads system. Minor lines include the Dakota, Missouri Valley and Western Railroad and the Red River Valley and also the Western railroad. The minor lines mostly operate on leased branch lines BSNF and CP . The current common carriers of Dakota Railroads are:

  • BNSF Railway (BNSF) :headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, this is one of the remaining transcontinental railroads and one of the largest railroad networks in North America.

  • Dakota, Missouri Valley and Western Railroad (DMVW) : started its operation in September 1990 operating over 360 miles of former Soo Line Railroad track in Montana and North Dakota.


  • Dakota Northern Railroad (DN) : is a Class III short line railroad that operate over 72 miles of trck in the northeastern portion of North Dakota.
  • Red River Valley and Western Railroad (RRVW) : is a regional Dakota railroad operating in the states of Dakota and Minnesota.
  • Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) : known as CP Rail is a Canadian Class I railway operated by Canadian Pacific Railway Limited.
  • Northern Plains Railroad (NPR) : is a Class III short line railroad that operates over 484 miles of track in northwestern U.S State of Minnesota and northern U.S state of North Dakota.




The defunct Dakota railroads are:

  • Burlington Northern Railway (BN) : was a United States based railroad company operating between 1970 and 1995.
  • Fairmount and Veblen Railway : was a short line railroad which operate in Richland County, North Dakota.
  • Great Northern Railway (GN) : extends from St.Paul in Minnesota to Seattle and is more than 1,700 miles.
  • Milwaukee Road (MILW) : officially the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad was a Class I railroad that is operated in the midwest and northwest of the United States from 1847.
  • Chicago and North Western Railway (CNW) : also known as North Western, this was once the Class I railroad in United States.
