James River

Sneak Profile:
Also nicknamed as the Jim River or the Dakota River , the James River is a tributary of the Missouri River. The approximate length of the river is about 1,143 km. It flows in the south and the north of the U.S. The main drainage area is a flat lowland sandwiched between the two plateau regions of Coteau du Missouri and the Coteau des Prairies du . This narrow slice of land was formed during the last ice age and thats why the river is so slender in its width and has some major tributaries along its length.. The James River is considered to one of the most difficult river to navigate through.

Origin/ Area Covered:
The river origins from Wells County , North Dakota which lies about 16 km in the north west of Fessenden. After a brief flow in the eastern direction of New Rockford it meanders in the south-south eastern portion of the North Dakota passing by the town of James. It is here that the James river faces the Jamestown Dam and then joins the Pipestem River. Thereby the James River enters into the Brown County which confronts two dams in the north east of Aberdeen. After coming very near to Columbia the James River is joined by the Elm River . There after the river passes through the areas of Huron and Mitchell and finally joining a small river named as Firesteel.

Special Feature:
Initially termed as the "unnavigable river" by the primitive tribes of Dakota, the river had another name in the past namely, Rivière aux Jacques. This name was given by the French explorers. The river infact acquired the name of “Dakota River” sometime in the later part of the 19 th Century. But this name did not stay on and probably got changed to what it is known today.
