Located in downtown Bismarck, Kirkwood Mall, is one of its oldest shopping center. Established in 1970, the Kirkwood Mall is owned and managed by the Urban Retail Properties. There are only three shopping malls in Bismarck, with the other two being the Gateway Mall and the Northbrook mall. Built on a 850,000 sq ft area, the mall is the largest shopping center in Bismarck today. Catering to more than 90 stores, Kirkwood Mall offers its customers a large variety of goods and services, all under the same roof. It offers men and women apparel, eateries, departmental stores, sports wear, home accessories, jewelries, shoes, services and many forms of specialty shops, among others. What sets it apart is the fact that while most shopping malls are located in the uptown or the suburban areas of the city, the Kirkwood mall is strategically built in downtown Bismarck.

Besides being the capital of North Dakota, Bismarck is also the hub of commerce. Some of the upcoming industries are those of health care, manufacturing units and retails stores and services, among others. Due to this economic boom, the city is today spreading out more and more. But the center of the city, or the downtown, as it is more popularly called, has a life of its own. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Bismarck. The streets are marked by a variety of shopping centers, ranging from large retail stores like the Bismarck Civic Center to small antique shops and curios.
The Kirkwood Mall, besides being a shopping center, also has many restaurants. Today the Mall is being supported by some of the major retail stores such as the Herberger's, J.C. Penney, Target, I. Keating Furniture and Scheels All Sports. Besides, events such as Art shows, seasonal sales, sidewalk sales and holiday events are a frequent in the Mall. The Kirkwood Mall is therefore one of the major attractions, both for the locals and visitors to the city.
