Liberty Memorial Building

Located within the beautiful North Dakota State Building complex, the Liberty Memorial Building is the oldest building still standing in the area. Located to the south of the main and the old North Dakota State Capitol, the construction for the Liberty Memorial building began in 1920 and was completed by 1924. In 1924, the latter was occupied by the growing number of State legislative offices, including the Library Commission, the State Historical Society Museum, the Adjutant General, and the Supreme Court, as a space crunch began to be felt in the State Capitol building. Located within the 160 acres of beautiful grounds, with other government agencies, the Liberty Memorial building is dedicated to the men and women of North Dakota who gave their lives in the First World War and stood for liberty.

The State Library Commission was stationed in the Memorial building from 1936 to 1970, until it was moved to the north Bismarck. It was brought back to the Liberty Memorial Building in 1982, by the then name of North Dakota State Library. Today, the Liberty Memorial Building houses the State Library and the North Dakota Department of Commerce.

The Liberty Memorial Building is built in the classic design of federal offices, made of limestone, granite, ornamental bronze, the Terrazzo and the Kasota marble, brought from different countries and even Europe. The building was however completely renovated in a modern style in 1982.

Today, the North Dakota State Capitol complex is one of the most frequented tourist spots in Bismarck, the state capital of North Dakota. There are many trails and parks surrounding the buildings, with beautiful petunia flowers and some important species of plants, shrubs, trees and flowers. In the winters, the place lights up with the Christmas and New Year celebrations. It holds a place of pride for the locals. Guided tours are conducted through the year of the entire North Dakota State Capitol complex.
