Red River Zoo

Sneak Preview: Located in the south western region of Fargo, North Dakota the Red River Zoo was opened in 1999 and is funded by the revenue earned by the zoo along with the contributions from the Red River Zoological Society which was formed in 1993. The Red River Zoo houses more than 300 animals ranging from 75 different species. The Red Panda is one exquisite collection of this zoo.

History: Initially the Red River Zoo started on a mere 8 acre land. However after the zoo gained AZA accreditation the total amount of land became 33 acres. Many farm buildings were modified for the present use in the zoo. In the past the land was basically without any natural vegetation and so in order to change the whole character of the barren land, over 500 trees and shrubs were planted along with the construction of 5 to 6 ponds connected with small flowing streams. The Red River Zoo is open for the public in between the month of May and September. In the year 1995, Warren and Irene Diederich of West Fargo donated a 1928 Carousel to the Red River Zoo.

Zoo Animals: The Red River Zoo houses more than 300 animals from about 75 different species. Several unique endangered species have also found their place in the zoo. Take a look at some of them:

  • Red Panda
  • Sichuan Takin
  • White-naped Crane
  • Slender-tailed Meerkat
  • Bactrian Camel
  • White-lipped Deer

Besides the above list of animals there are regular arrivals of many other species from time to time.
