Sheyenne River

Sneak Profile :
One of the main tributaries of the Red River of North Dakota the Sheyenne River flows in the Red River drainage basin. The length of the river is about 29 miles.

Origin/Area Covered:
The Sheyenne River has its beginning from the north of Mc Clusky , North Dakota after which it meanders in the eastern direction before it turns towards Mc Ville, North Dakota in the south. The river while its south way flow passes through the regions of Griggs County and Barnes County. After this the Sheyenne River turns north east towards Lisbon which is in the Ransom City, North Dakota, U.S. A lake named as Astabula is formed behind the Baldhill Dam which is situated in the northern part of the Valley City, North Dakota. The Valley City has a lot of bridges over the Sheyenne River , including the Hi- Line Railroad Bridge . From Lisbon, the river crosses the Sheyenne National Grassland entering the Cass County near the Kindred City, North Dakota. This region is very popular for its scenic beauty and is a great place for those interested in adventures. From Kindred City the river flows north-north east into the fertile region of Red River Valley in the North.

Special Feature:
As the river enters the region of Red River Valley, the flow pattern changes which is quite amazing. It leaves the grasslands and continues in the fertile clay soil of the Valley. In the previous years due to flooding the river along with the Red River caused damage to life and property in the North Dakota Region. The areas which suffered the most due to flooding were cities like West Fargo, North Dakota and Harwood in North Dakota. However due to the construction of a diversion canal at Horace , North Dakota some of the cities got respite from the 1997 floods which devastated cities of Grand Forks, North Dakota and East Grand Forks, Minnesota.
