The North Dakota State Library, located within the Liberty Memorial Building, in the North Dakota State Capitol grounds of Bismarck, the capital city of North Dakota. The Liberty Memorial Building is the oldest building in the State grounds today. The pristine beauty of the Complex is complimented by the many trails, parks, statues and memorials. Established in 1907 as the Public Library Commission, the office was then located within the State Capitol building. Later, the name was changed to the State Library Commission. In 1936, the office was shifted to the Liberty Memorial Building, where it remained till 1870. Following this, the Library was shifted to the Randall Building, situated in the north of the capital. During this time, the State Library Commission was again renamed as the North Dakota State Library. The latter was relocated to the Liberty Memorial building, which was a tribute to the end of the First World War.

Built with the mission to serve the public, the State Library is open to visitors from 8:00am to 5:00pm from Monday through Friday. Free library cards are provided to residents of North Dakota. It also offers both online and face-to-face training, from beginners' to advanced levels, to government officials, children, teachers, academicians in using the Online Dakota Information Network and the online resources. The North Dakota State Library provides guided tours of the same for children, teachers and public officials. An access to the library services can also be made with schools on request.
North Dakota State Library is one of the many buildings located within the 160 acres of the favorite tourist spot of North Dakota State Capitol mall. Some of the other well known sites are the North Dakota Heritage Center Museum, the Governor's Residence and many beautiful trails including the Arboretum and the Prairie Trails. The Parks and the grounds have some stunning statues, which are important symbols of history and tradition in North Dakota. One of the most popular statue is the Sakakawea statue, which represents a woman belonging to the Shoshone Indian tribe who is said to have played a major role in the Lewis and Clark expedition. Created by Leonard Crunelle, it is located right in front of the Liberty Memorial Building.
